THE EASIEST AND MOST ACCURATE METHOD
Cucina Rustica table runners are a bespoke product. This means that we make each table runner to fit your table rather than having predetermined lengths. When it comes to making decisions about the finished length of a table runner, there are a few considerations to make. But don’t worry, we’ll help you through the choices.
Firstly, you will need to decide whether your table runner runs along the length of the table or across the width of the table. Let’s take a look at the options…
For table runners that run along the length of the table
The most common table runner runs along the length of the table and hangs off each end of the table. The place settings for each diner, the plates and cutlery, sit mostly on the uncovered parts of the table with this style. Because of this, there are generally fewer spills and stains discovered on the linen at the end of the meal. Aesthetically, a table runner that runs along the length of the table provides more drama for central table displays and large platters.
To determine the finished length, you will need to measure the length of the table top and add the drop for each end. If the ‘drop’ is a new term for you, read on and we will explain further.
For table runners that run across the width of the table
An alternative look is to have multiple table runners that run across the width of the table. They define each table setting for the two diners that sit across from each other. The diners plate and cutlery sit entirely on the table runner. If you have a table that seats three diners on each side of the table, then three table runners are employed. This is a more intimate setting and connect the diners sitting opposite each other. If you are using table runners to protect your dining table, then this arrangement is ideal.
To determine the finished length of each table runner, you will need to measure the width of the table top and add the drop for each side.
What’s the drop?
The drop of a table runner is the length of fabric that hangs off the edge of the table. It provides an elegant finish and provides visual balance.
How to choose the right drop?
The right drop is somewhat subjective but is generally determined by your dining chairs. To determine the drop, you measure vertically from the top of the table to the top of the chair seat. Then deduct 1 cm. This is the ideal drop measurement.
If you don’t have chairs on the short ends of your table, we still recommend using the same method to determine the drop, just in case you need to add extra chairs. But, you can choose whatever drop that you think suits your style. Some people like them to hang a little lower. Some, like them to fall to the floor for dramatic effect.
Calculating the final measurements
For table runners that run along the length of the table:
Table length + drop + drop = final table runner length
For table runners that run across the width of the table:
Table width + drop + drop = final table runner length
